What did you do to your VW today????
Indeed it is... Last weekend I fixed a broken seat mount and this weekend I am going to start rebuilding the engine! Whoohoo!
I also just purchased a set of EMPI Sprint-stars, I might even lower her a bit if I'm feeling brave!
WOW, spring must have made me madddddd. I have ordered over $1300 in parts! Will I have enough time to install them all? Or will I be left with a few winter projects again? :)
Sounds like you got some awesome stuff. I'm sure you have enough to keep you busy for awhile.
Just finished installing a super disc and a 2100 # kennedy pressure plate. The old set up was slipping a little. It looks like weather has finally broke here on the east coast. Going for a long cruise tomarrow.
Ok, so still delaying that engine build, getting my shop in order and waiting for warmer weather as I need to drag out the power washer and give the engine case a good cleaning. Three years of dust and a couple of cob webs...
New shocks, CV's and axles, EMPI Sprint-stars, billet running-boards, and a GT exhaust! It's been a long day ! Pictures coming soon!
![]() Hope these come thru. New EMPT Sprintstars, and running boards, CV's ans axles, an shocks. LOOOOOONG day! :) |
Just got the pan back from the sandblasters shop....she looks good and just a few more minor patches and some smoothing out. The engine and the tranny will be back soon for me to see. My wife got the House Of Color match up and the painter here in Ansbach has agreed to shoot it!......Purchased a new drivers door, already replaced the pass. door. Now on to painting the pan and sealing it up. |
Sweet 72 Kafer! I would like to do a body off restoration, maybe next time my bug comes apart I will be richer.... or not.
Anyways I dry fitted the case, cylinders, heads, exhaust, and oil pump cover to figure out my oil filter line problem. I can find no alternative to routing the lines between the exhaust pipes and decided to wrap the exhaust. This should also reduce the heat in the engine bay. More updates soon. |
![]() Just finished shortening and re-threading the intake and exhaust studs for these awesome allen head nuts I found. Just waitng on rings and an oil pump via CB Performance before preceeding with the engine assembly. Should be done next weekend less the engine tin that I am in the process of re-painting. New wheels, air cleaner assemblies, pedal pads, and a solid stainless firewall are all enroute via Moore Parts and tires via Sams Club. End of May is my target for everything to be done. After 3.5 years I will finally be driving my bug again! |
I like those exhaust and intake allen head nuts, where did you find those things? Do they require a new stud or just to be shortened? I have to replace one of my exhaust studs and might consider doing this upgrade......looks great. Good luck on your rebuild....keep us up to date!

They are the same thread pitch and diameter as stock nuts but you have to shorten all of the studs you are installing them on. I am using them on both the intake and exhaust. |
Damn it! I was unpacking my wheels getting them ready to take to the tire shop to have tires mounted when I noticed one of them was missing the valve stem!! Now I have to wait for one to get here from California. Damn it!
Good news is that I don't have a running motor yet so I guess it's not a big deal. I was just excited to see it with new wheels and tires..... Soon enough, I suppose. |
Did they come from JBugs? Mine were missing too!! Auto Zone has exact replacements for the chrome covers!
I noticed from the ad in JBugs that when you purchase those rims that you have to buy the longer mounting bolts with washers to make them work....the stock mounting bolts won't work. I like those rims (914's-2 litres). Going to talk to my finatial advisor (wife) and see what she thinks, I'm back in the sand box and gotta go through her for new purchases.....she's got good taste though!
Mooreparts.com and they have the correct mounting studs, no washer needed. In fact I have original 2L wheels and they require a longer stud then the reproduction wheels I just bought.
Thanks for the info zwbeetle. Autozone does have the exact same valve stems. Now I don't have to wait! Thanks for the tip!

Finishing up with mounting the new wheels. The front were no problem as I upgraded the front brakes to disc two years ago. The kit has shallow hubs so there was no clearance problems with the center cap on the wheels.
The back required a little grinding on the hub (reduced the length by 1/8") to fit the center caps. I also needed to re-tap the threads. For the rest of today I am cleaning the shop and tomorrow I am washing my car for the first time in a couple of years. Dust accumulates fast here with the wind blowing it through every orifice it can find, at least winter is almost over! |
